Encouraging your store employees to work faster and more efficiently will naturally lead to a more successful business. Far too many workers remain disengaged in their current position, which ultimately hurts the company as a whole. When workers are disengaged, they will show up to work simply to get a paycheck without any real drive or passion. As a company owner and/or executive, it’s your responsibility to keep your employees engaged; keep reading for 3 ways to improve your employees’ performance.
#1 – Reduce Distractions
Distractions are a serious concern that may prevent employees from working at 100%. Employees who are distracted will have a more difficult time focusing on their current objectives and tasks. Identifying and eliminating some of the most common distractions will result in better employee performance.
Have you noticed employees browsing their Facebook page or other social media sites? If so, you need to put a stop to this. Gather your employees together so you can stress the importance of remaining on task. This should cut down on some of the distractions such as Facebook.
Other distractions may include televisions, radio, unnecessary “chatting,” etc. You don’t have to eliminate talking altogether, but you should emphasize the importance of remaining on task to your employees.
#2 – Throw Company Parties and Events
Throwing company-sponsored parties, lunches and events will give your employees a chance to step outside of their comfort zone to relax and unwind. Studies have shown that employees work harder once they’ve returned from a company party or event. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on some expensive, luxurious party, but instead throw a basic party outside of the office for your employees. It’s a welcome gesture that will likely result in better employee performance throughout the workplace.
The key thing to remember is that company parties and events need to be thrown away from the normal work environment; otherwise, it won’t have the same beneficial effect. Even if it’s just at the park down the road, be sure to throw your company events in a location other than the typical work office. Placing employees outside of their comfort zone will give them the opportunity to unwind from the normal work environment.
#3 – Motivate Your Employees
Motivating your employees will give them more drive and determination to excel in their current position. This is a highly undervalued technique that can yield huge improvements to just about any business or company. Motivation can be done through verbal acknowledgment, bonuses, rewards and even handing out trophies. Employees want to know that all of their hard work isn’t going unnoticed, and rewarding them for meeting certain goals is the perfect way to accomplish this.
These are just a few of the many techniques used to improve employee performance in retail store environments. Above all else, though, you should keep the lines of communication open with your employees and allow them to voice any concerns they have.
